Assignment 9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

  • Who: My first interest was to have all car manufacturing companies input this breathalyzer product into the cars so it would be in every car that was purchased. I realized that this is not realistic because some people do not fall into this market. Some drivers do not drink and some are underage. Others do drink and know their limits and do not need this product because they do not drink and drive. Also, I feel that some car manufacturers would be opposed to having this product in every vehicle because it can be considered an annoyance.
    • In one interview, I had someone who was concerned for her friend’s habit of drinking and driving home. She continues to try and stop her friend but she is not always with her. She thinks this product would be a great help for her friend, but she also mentioned that she does not drink so it would not be useful to her.
    • I interviewed two mothers and both had the same reactions for their children. One mother was concerned for her child that is away to college and would like this product installed in their car to prevent any attempts at driving impaired. The other was concerned for her younger child’s influence with alcohol who’s in high school. Teachers at his high school have brought up the issue of drinking and driving and continue to promote sobriety.
  • What: This need affects the life of an innocent person driving on the street or even just walking along the sidewalk. Fixing this issue can save thousands of lives a year by just inserting a machine into a vehicle and providing a test blow within seconds.
    • This product would definitely help the issue, but one student I interviewed brought up something that would totally defeat the purpose. If an impaired driver insisted on driving they could have a sober person that wasn’t going with them blow into the machine for them so they can turn on the car and drive away. But this would put the sober person at risk with their friend’s life and in the end be a stupid decision to make.
  • Why: The need is not different for an insider or outsider. It’s just a matter if they really care about their own lives or not, such as the friend who continues to drive home after a night of drinking.
    • A teacher that I interviewed also mentioned that those who drive may think they’re being “cool” right now because they are drinking alcohol and then driving home with their friends. But they won’t be cool anymore when they get into an accident and kill the other passengers or even kill themselves for a stupid decision they made.

Assignment 8A – Solving The Problem

  • My opportunity has to do with drinking and driving intoxicated. By intoxicated I mean drinking alcohol, although there is also a problem with impaired driving from drug use as well.
  • There is a product that is used for individuals that have been caught driving while intoxicated and have received multiple DUI’s. It’s similar to a breathalyzer but it’s attached to your vehicle. In order to drive the vehicle, the driver must blow into the machine and it will detect your BAC (blood alcohol concentration). If the BAC is lower than the legal limit of 0.08% then the machine will allow you to start your car.
  • I believe this machine should be installed into every car to prevent any individual from drinking impaired. It also asks you to give a test after a certain amount of time driving. It can be every 30 minutes or by the hour, to ensure that you have not drank more within the time of driving.
  • People may think this is an annoyance because you have to use the machine in order to start the car. If someone is in a hurry it is understandable that this machine can get in the way.
  • The best way to sell this idea is to make sure they understand the reason for this. It is for their own safety. There are millions of people driving every day and there are hundreds driving intoxicated. Thousands of people die every year because of this and it can be easily minimized with the installation of these machines.
