Assignment 5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

1.    NFL says Sunday's Dolphins game won't be in Miami; league considering options
b.    Due to Hurricane Irma approaching Miami this weekend, the Miami Dolphins and Tampa-Bay Buccaneers game has been postponed. There has not been an official decision made yet whether the game will be played Monday night or during both teams’ bye-week. This means that they do not have a game scheduled so they can rest midway through the season, meaning sometime in November. Many Miami Dolphins players do not want the game to change to another location because it is an advantage for them to play at home. They also do not think it would be a good idea to change the game to November during their bye-week because then they would not be able to rest and would play games for 16 consecutive weeks. Now all they can do is wait for the official result.
c.     The problem: The Miami Dolphins game has been cancelled for Sunday night because of Irma. The staff and team do not want to play somewhere else because then they would lose their home fan base. They also do not wish to play during their bye-week because their performance would probably not be the same since they would not be able to rest.
d.    The people: The NFL organization, Miami Dolphins and Tampa-Bay Buccaneers staff, team, and fans, Miami, FL and any other location of where a game would occur.

2.    Richardson emerges as starting option; Carolina discusses Kaaya; Wade/Heat/UM notes
b.    There is a lot of negotiations happening with the starting 5 roster for the Miami Heat. Winslow who was on the team last year is a prospect, but due to recent injuries he has been working hard to prove that he can be part of the starting 5. Richardson is also a top contestant for starting 5. He would be a great small forward for the team. Dwyane Wade is also a topic with the Miami Heat. The Chicago Bulls have also not reported of any buyout with Wade. There’s a possibility that Wade might come back to his home team one day.
c.     The problem: The Miami Heat players are currently working hard to prove themselves to be able to get a starting position. The staff now has to make tough decisions with who they want to play. Also, the organization still does not have a final set team since Wade is still the topic of conversation. So the organization needs to make some kind decision on whether they want to give their efforts to get Wade back or continue to build a new team.
d.    The people: The NBA organization, the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls organization, staff, team, families and fans; Chicago and Miami community.

3.    Sherman/Jeter plan to reduce payroll, says contacted investor
b.    There have been issues with the purchase of the Miami Marlin’s team by Derek Jeter, former Yankees player, and Bruce Sherman. Many are speculating they do not have enough money to continue paying key players that are already on the team. Many players will most likely get an enormous cut in their payrolls. Stanton, the star of the Marlins, is in consideration for getting traded just so they can pay players less. It’s said that Sherman and Jeter do not have enough liquid capital put together to afford a payroll so big like it is now. Concession stands, from stadium revenues are not at the level they need to be, therefore, the Marlins team itself is not producing enough money needed to pay its expenses.
c.     The problem: Derek Jeter is a very famous baseball player but that doesn’t mean that he would be a great team owner. As it is the Marlins team still needs to pay off their new stadium debts so why would they want to get rid of the face of the Marlins team, Giancarlo Stanton. If Stanton cannot get paid to his full potential, then the Marlins need to find a new owner. The team will no longer have the hype that it does because of Stanton’s home run hits if he is no longer on the team. The team will not get even close to its profits and revenues as it is now if there is no one excited to watch.
d.    The people: The MLB organization, the Marlins organization, team, staff, families and fans; the community of Miami, FL.

4.    Andrew Huston: Open up Florida's closed political system
b.    Taxpayers in Florida have decided to use a closed primary, meaning that NPAs and independent voters cannot be part of the vote when selecting the primaries for Florida. Republicans and Democrats are the only parties that can participate in the decision making. Tim Canova, NSU law professor, disagrees with this. He says that if we actually believe in democracy then we would open up the voting to all citizens. You would get more out of it if everyone could participate in the debates, etc.
c.     The problem: Taxpayers are in control of the decision that has been made to have closed primaries. There have been multiple hearings to speak about this issue and a petition has been made to collect signatures to open the voting process to all citizens.
d.    The people: This affects all Florida citizens and the future of our government.

5.    Driver, 28, charged in hit-and-run crash
b.    A man in Gainesville, FL was arrested for a hit and run on Saturday at around 4 PM. The man refused to take a field sobriety test and also a breathalyzer test when at GDP. He was finally charged after further evidence from him and his girlfriend. THE GDP found he was driving with a suspended license and was charged with a DUI.
c.     The problem: Luckily the hit and run did not involve any fatalities. There easily could have been a fatal accident due to intoxicated driving. The driver also had a suspended license which is illegal to drive with. Both the driver and his girlfriend failed to admit who was driving.

d.    The people: The Gainesville community was in danger in this event. Whoever was walking, driving, etc. could have been hit by this drunk driver and gotten hurt or even killed.

  1. When the NFL announced that the Dolphins game was cancelled I never even thought about the problem described in the first article. I'm actually sort of amazed that the NFL doesn't have procedures set in place for exactly this type of situation since they seem to have rules about everything. As a Yankees fan I actually had no idea that Derek Jeter is now going to be a part-owner of the Marlins, it should be interesting to see how his background playing in the MLB will translate to being a team owner.

  2. The hit and run accident is an interesting point. Hit and Runs are so common nowadays and there is no answer to fixing them. I have actually thought of some cool ideas to prevent hit and runs. I am surprised that there hasn't been an answer for them yet. Many people all over the world experience this unfair problem. I remember when it happened to me I was so frustrated and felt hopeless.

  3. Reading about the large pay cuts in the Marlin's payroll isn't quite shocking. The Miami Marlins have not been known to sell out a stadium or win a few games for that. Hopefully these pay cuts aren't too drastic and don't drive away our good players and Derek Jeter along with the new managers find ways to improve the team and sales.

  4. Hit and run problems can be very common wherever there are cars and traffic. Everyone living in the city or town are compromised and in danger when something like this happens. To prevent them there are many things that could be thought of, but something efficient and effective is what is needed to treat this problem.

To solve this I thought that if the government creates a law that all cars should be programed to have a code where policemen could press a button and the car would stop to prevent this type of issue.
