Assignment 8A – Solving The Problem

  • My opportunity has to do with drinking and driving intoxicated. By intoxicated I mean drinking alcohol, although there is also a problem with impaired driving from drug use as well.
  • There is a product that is used for individuals that have been caught driving while intoxicated and have received multiple DUI’s. It’s similar to a breathalyzer but it’s attached to your vehicle. In order to drive the vehicle, the driver must blow into the machine and it will detect your BAC (blood alcohol concentration). If the BAC is lower than the legal limit of 0.08% then the machine will allow you to start your car.
  • I believe this machine should be installed into every car to prevent any individual from drinking impaired. It also asks you to give a test after a certain amount of time driving. It can be every 30 minutes or by the hour, to ensure that you have not drank more within the time of driving.
  • People may think this is an annoyance because you have to use the machine in order to start the car. If someone is in a hurry it is understandable that this machine can get in the way.
  • The best way to sell this idea is to make sure they understand the reason for this. It is for their own safety. There are millions of people driving every day and there are hundreds driving intoxicated. Thousands of people die every year because of this and it can be easily minimized with the installation of these machines.

  1. This does seem like a great idea, I can definitely see how it could be met with a lot of opposition though from people who would not want to go through the trouble of breathing into a machine every time they want to drive their car. Even more so if the car is asking them questions every so often to make sure that they are still sober. I agree that it would make the roads a lot safer, I hope that it would be possible to vote something like this into law in our country.

  2. Hi Lourdes,
I think it's upsetting that breathalyzers are only required to be put in cars if someone has a previous record with DUI before. I think it definitely should be placed in more cars to prevent future incidents or even deaths due to drunk driving. However, I do agree with your point that some people may get annoyed, especially if they're in a hurry or just flat out don't drink. It would be interesting to see if someone could come up with a better method that wouldn't require so much from the driver but still is as effective in preventing a DUI, as a breathalyzer.

  3. Hi Lourdes, this idea would be a good start to getting people to prioritize safety. I can't see the US making it a law to get that installed in everyone's car anytime soon, it would be difficult for police to regulate and monitor. Hopefully regulations in the near future change to include something like this.

  4. Good evening Lourdes. I believe that this is a wonderful idea where it will keep a lot of people in the safe side. This app will help to reduce the percentage of accidents caused by drinking, and it will contribute to keeping the person safe. If this idea could be turned into something legal as Ryan mentioned, then a lot of college cities like Gainesville would not have to worry and even less about their people who have a hard time driving there because of drunk people and other students looking for parking spots in order to party.
