Assignment 16A –What’s Your Secret Sauce?

1) Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.
  • I speak two languages fluently, English and Spanish, which has helped my career.
  • I am multicultural. I come from a Hispanic family of Cuban decent. This has helped me open my eyes to different perspectives and value other people’s traditions and beliefs.
  • I am an athletic person so I consider myself as being very active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle on a daily basis.
  • I consider myself to be very independent. I’m an only child & I have always tried to do things on my own and teach myself lots of new things.
  • I am very passionate. I come from a very established and united family. Each family member has their own views on different aspects and we all respect each other’s opinions and are strongly passionate about our morals and ethics.

2) Interview the five people who know you the best.
  • My first interview was with my mother: "She prides herself on her individuality. In other words, she does not like to follow the pack. This is a fact being that she has selected to major in CM, a career that is not frequently chosen by women. She is also a very private person and courageous in her life decisions. She is not easily persuaded after her decision has been made. She is very organized and detailed oriented. She is self- driven. She likes to eat healthy and exercise regularly."
  • My second was with one of my best friends. We have known each other since I was in 3rd grade: "She is a very hard working and focused person. She doesn't allow herself to get distracted from tasks that need to be completed. She is a team player and great person to work with. She is driven to reach her goals and sometimes even surpasses them. She is a kind hearted person and great friend."
  • My third interview was with my roommate. We have known each other since 8th grade and became very good friends in high school: "She is very passionate for what she loves. She is neat and routine-oriented. She likes to get things done quick and early and usually does not like to leave things to the last minute. She is a great listener when you need her to be."
  • The fourth interview was with my dad: "What makes Luly different is that she has a great heart, doesn’t talk or like to hear anyone talking nonsense about anyone known. She is very focused, determined and set in her ways yet flexible to do things (at times) that she would normally not do. She loves basketball, fast cars – all types new and old, she is blunt and to the point without ever being disrespectful. She has a tremendous desire to always do the right thing even though others are doing her wrong. Very money conscious, appreciative of unique design and architectures, and takes great pride her studies."
  • The last interview I did was with my uncle, my mom’s brother: "She is an empathetic individual who never says anything negative of anyone.  She is also a guarded person; by that I mean that she never volunteers any unnecessary details. She hates gossip. She has the ability to perceive sincerity. She does not like posers or assuming personalities."

3) Reflect on the differences.
  • I think it’s hard to see your own qualities at time and for other people it’s easier to see them of you. You sometimes do not realize certain habits that you do that others see on a daily basis. I think these interviews are as accurate as can be. There were some qualities described about me that I didn’t even think about when trying to describe myself. Some similarities that I saw was that both my uncle and father know very well that I do not like to gossip about others. Another is that my mom, my best friend and roommate all said in some way that I am a driven and determined person. I definitely agree with that. I wouldn’t make any corrections but just add on to the list to expand more about what kind of person I am. These five people I think know me the best because they are the people I hang out with most, so it’s understandable that they would know what my qualities and traits are.

  1. Hi Lourdes, I see we have a lot in common. I also come from a Cuban background on my mother's side. My father is Colombian, so I speak Spanish as well as english. My family members are all very passionate and we are each so opinionated, I think that has helped me become a more confident person in my own opinion and be more assertive. I think you have a great group of people surrounding you and supporting you. Likewise, it was difficult to see and choose my own best qualities, but my family helped confirm what I already thought.

  2. Lourdes, I'm also an only child myself and I agree with you, I think it's helped me to become much more independent and rely on myself. I admire that you pride yourself on being an individual, it's so inspiring to read when people are true to themselves and don't let anyone convince them otherwise, a trait I think will take you far in life. I also agree with your point that other people around you can sometimes pick up on traits that you may not even have noticed that you have; that's observation I made when I conducted my interviews as well.
